Early Literacy Programs

On the Road to Reading

The On the Road to Reading program provides fun, interactive story times for pre-school children in Cleveland. Story times focus on pre-literacy skills to ensure that children are ready for kindergarten.  Trained librarians go to community health clinics, WIC offices, and day care centers to provide age-appropriate books for the children and suggestions for the parents/caregivers on how to practice early literacy techniques.

Recognizing that, for many children, a passion for reading begins at a young age, the Library opened two Early Literacy Centers. At Carnegie West Branch, the Library installed interactive equipment and reconfigured space to recreate a Farmer’s Market to engage parents in introducing their young children to literacy concepts in a creative way. At Woodland Branch, the Library used special equipment to create Woodland Wonderland Stay and Play, which teaches guided play to parents and children.
